Top Three Tips for Applying for Disability Benefits with Diabetes

Here are the top three tips for applying for Social Security Disability benefits if you have been diagnosed with diabetes and it’s impacted your ability to work, my name is Kaitlin Wildoner and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible, so they can focus on getting better. Today we’re going to talk about how to win Social Security disability benefits with the diabetes diagnosis.

First, it’s important to remember that everyone’s experience with diabetes is different. Some people might have a minimal interruption to their ability to function while others might be rendered extremely limited in their functioning. Therefore, it’s important to honestly state your limitations both to the Social Security Administration and to the doctors that are helping treat you. This can help you personally, so that your doctors can appropriately treat your specific situation.

With your disability case, you’ll want to talk to your doctors about applying for disability benefits because of the diabetes. Sometimes the doctors might encourage you and offer to help in any way that they can. If they do that, take them up on that offer. It’s more than writing that they believe you can’t work and are totally disabled, but instead they should explain why you can’t work and are totally disabled, what functional limitations do you have and what is the cause of those functional limitations? Diabetes can be a difficult condition to obtain disability benefits for.
