Can I Get Social Security Disability if I Have Never Worked?
Can you receive Social Security disability benefits if you have never worked?
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
Today we’re going to talk about whether you might qualify for Social Security disability benefits if you have never worked. First, it’s important to note that there are two different Social Security Disability programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
When it comes to SSDI benefits, you cannot receive those if you have never worked unless you would qualify as a spouse or a child of a currently disabled, deceased, or retired worker who is currently receiving records on their own record. SSDI benefits are available to those who have worked five of the last 10 years. However as mentioned, there are certain exceptions for certain children and/or spouses of individuals who are currently retired, disabled, or deceased.
When it comes to SSI benefits, you can receive those if you have never worked as long as you and your household’s income and assets are below certain thresholds ($2,000 in assets if you are married and $3,000 in assets if you are single – income thresholds vary depending on household size).
