Can You Receive TWO Social Security Checks at the Same Time?
A question I have received more than a few times is whether someone can actually collect two Social Security disability checks. My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. Today we’re going to talk about whether you can actually receive two Social Security disability checks.
The short answer is yes, you can, but the actual answer is much more detailed. You can collect two disability checks under certain circumstances, such as if you receive both SSDI and SSI benefits. This doesn’t happen often, but it can happen, for example, if your SSDI check is less than what you would be eligible for under SSI benefits. (You must independently qualify for SSI benefits, including being below certain income/asset thresholds). For example, if your SSDI benefit amount is $650 a month, but you would also be eligible to receive SSI benefits up to the full federal SSI amount, which is currently $841 a month, you can receive $650 a month from SSDI and the balance, the $191 a month, from SSI. However, if your SSDI benefit amount is $900 a month and you are only eligible for the full federal SSI of $841 a month, you would only receive the $900 a month from SSDI and no additional SSI benefits.
There are other circumstances where you might be able to collect two Social Security disability checks, and the best thing that you can do to see if you qualify is to reach out to Social Security directly, as they will have all of your information and be able to advise you.
