How to Start the #SSDI or #SSI Application Process
If you are disabled and unable to work, you may be wondering how you even start the disability application process. My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. Today we’re going to talk about how to actually apply for Social Security Disability benefits. I also want to note that while this is a quick overview, I have previously gone more in-depth on this topic for both SSDI applications and SSI applications.
To apply for Social Security Disability benefits, you can complete an application in one of three ways: (1) in person with your local Social Security Office (2) online, directly with Social Security, and (3) is over the phone, again with your local Social Security Office.
The easiest way to apply for SSDI benefits is often online directly with Social Security. To start, you will want to make sure you are on Social Security Administration’s website, ssa.gov, not a private company or other website. This is because you will be providing your personal information, including your name, your social security number, your date of birth, your medical providers, conditions that are preventing you from working, all sorts of personal information that you want to make sure is going to the right place.
While you can hire an attorney to help you submit the initial application, it often isn’t totally necessary as long as you confirm that you are on the Social Security Administration’s website. When you’re applying, you will see that much of the information that you need in that initial application is information that you know best, such as your personal information, your name, address, date of birth, social security number, your work history and your medical providers, including who they are when you first saw them, when you most recently saw them, and if you have any upcoming appointments.
