Social Security Disability After a Knee Replacement

Social Security Disability After a Knee Replacement

Yes, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits if you have recently had a knee replacement – but it might not be as easy as you think.

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

In this video, we briefly talk about qualifying for Social Security disability (SSDI or SSI) benefits following a knee replacement. It’s important to note that to qualify for SSDI or SSI benefits, you must be totally disabled and unable to work for a period of at least 12 months. Sometimes a knee replacement will take you out of work for six months, but that does not meet the duration requirement for SSDI or SSI. However, if you have ongoing functional limitations after the knee replacement and after the initial course of physical therapy, you want your doctor to notate that in your file.

After a knee replacement, it’s important for Social Security to understand why you are disabled and unable to perform any job for at least a year – that is the key to winning disability after a knee replacement.
