10 Tips for Successfully Applying for Social Security Disability

Here are 10 top tips for successfully applying for Social Security disability benefits.

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

In today’s video, we’re going to discuss ten top tips for successfully applying for Social Security disability benefits.

  1. Apply as soon as possible! Don’t wait until your medical condition gets worse or your financial situation becomes dire. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of success. You want to apply as soon as you realize that you will be disabled and unable to work for a period of at least 12 months.
  2. Provide detailed and accurate information about your medical information, medical condition, and how your condition impacts your ability to work. This includes medical records, doctors notes, and statements from people who know about your condition and the impact it has on your ability to function.
  3. Follow your doctor’s orders and keep detailed records of your medical treatments and appointments. This shows that you’re taking your medical conditions seriously and doing everything you can to improve your health.
  4. Be patient, but persistent. The Social Security disability application process can take several months and even years and it’s not uncommon to be denied on your first attempt. Don’t give up and don’t be afraid to appeal the unfavorable decision if necessary.
  5. Hire a Social Security disability attorney to help you with the application and appeals process. An attorney can help you navigate the complex rules and regulations and help to increase your chances of success.
  6. Be prepared to attend medical exams and answer questions about your medical conditions and daily activities. Anytime you’re talking to Social Security, make sure you’re being honest and straightforward with your answers. Don’t exaggerate or downplay your symptoms!
  7. Keep records of your work history, including the jobs you’ve held, the tasks you performed for those jobs, and the dates that you were employed by each employer. This information can be helpful in determining your eligibility for Social Security disability benefits.
  8. Make sure you’re keeping track of deadlines and requirements throughout the Social Security disability application process. Missing a deadline or failing to provide requested information can delay your claim, or even result in an ultimate denial.
  9. Communicate clearly and promptly with Social Security (and your attorney, if you have one!) about any questions or concerns you have about your application or appeal.
  10. Be prepared for the possibility of a denial and know your options for appealing that decision. Don’t give up and don’t be afraid to seek help from a qualified Social Security disability attorney.
