Changes to SSDI Benefits for 2024 | Beacon Disability

3 Changes Coming to SSDI Benefits in 2024

Here are three changes coming to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in 2024.

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

1. Cost-of-Living Increase

The cost-of-living increase for SSDI benefits in 2024 is going to be 3.2%.
This is lower than the 2023 cost-of-living adjustment and is set to begin with benefits payable to Social Security Disability beneficiaries beginning in January of 2024.

2. Average Monthly Benefit in 2024

This means that the average SSDI monthly benefit amount is going to be roughly $1,537 per month in 2024.
Your specific SSDI benefit amount, however, is going to vary from that, as it’s based on your income and what you earned and paid Social Security taxes on while you were able to work.

3. Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) & Trial Work Period Thresholds

Finally, the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) threshold will increase:

  • From $1,470 per month in 2023
  • To $1,550 per month in 2024 for non-blind individuals

And:

  • From $2,460 per month in 2023
  • Up to $2,590 per month in 2024 for blind individuals

The threshold for earnings during a Trial Work Period for SSDI beneficiaries is also set to increase in 2024—up to $1,110 per month.
