5 Things to Do While Waiting for Your SSDI Decision
If you’re waiting for a decision on your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application, you may be wondering what to do in the meantime.
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. In this video, we will discuss five things to do while waiting for your SSDI decision.
1. Gather and Organize Your Medical Documentation
- Collect all relevant medical records, test results, and doctor’s notes related to your disability.
- Keep copies of your medical records organized and easily accessible.
- Update your medical records regularly to include any new information or changes in your condition.
2. Follow Prescribed Treatment
- Adhere to your doctor’s recommended treatment plans and attend all scheduled medical appointments.
- Take prescribed medications as instructed and inform your healthcare providers of any changes in your condition or of any side effects from your medication.
- Complying with your medical treatment shows that you are actively seeking medical improvement and can help to strengthen your case.
- You are always entitled to a second opinion, though—just try to be clear about that when discussing with your doctors and/or SSA.
3. Maintain Open Communication with the Social Security Administration
- Notify the SSA of any changes in your contact information, including your mailing address and your phone number.
- Respond promptly to any requests for additional information or documentation that’s sent to you by Social Security.
- Keep records of all communication with the SSA, including dates, names, and the details of the conversations or correspondence.
4. Consider Seeking Support and Assistance
- Consult with a Social Security disability attorney to understand your rights, navigate the application and appeals process, and address any questions or concerns that you have.
- Additional support from disability advocacy organizations or support groups can be helpful.
- Connecting with other individuals who are facing similar challenges can help you gain insight from them.
5. Explore Alternative Sources of Financial Assistance
- Research and explore other potential sources of financial assistance such as state or local disability programs, community resources, or nonprofit organizations.
- You can also look into programs that may provide temporary financial relief or help with basic needs while waiting for your SSDI decision.
