How to Apply for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) Benefits: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you wondering how to apply for SSDI—Social Security Disability Insurance—benefits? This video is for you.

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. Today, I’m going to provide a very brief overview of how to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.

Step 1: Gather Necessary Information

You’ll want to begin by gathering all of the necessary information.

  • Collect personal information such as your Social Security number, birth certificate, and proof of citizenship or lawful residency.
  • You’ll also want to gather details about your medical condition, work history, and financial information.

Step 2: Review SSDI Eligibility Criteria

Next, you’ll want to review the eligibility criteria for SSDI benefits.

  • Ensure that you have enough work credits based on your age and work history.
  • Generally, you need to have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain number of years to qualify.
  • We often say that you must have worked for five of the last ten years.

Step 3: Complete the SSDI Application

There are multiple ways to apply for SSDI benefits:

  • Apply online through the Social Security Administration’s website
  • Call the Social Security Administration’s toll-free number
  • Visit your local Social Security office to apply in person

Step 4: Provide Detailed Medical Information

When completing the application, be sure to provide thorough and accurate information about your medical condition.

  • Include the names and contact information of the providers who have treated you
  • List your medications, treatments, and any relevant test results

Step 5: Submit Work History Details

The application will also ask for work history details.

  • Provide a detailed work history, including:
    • Names of your employers
    • Dates of employment
    • Job duties
    • Earnings

The Social Security Administration will use this information in part to determine your eligibility for SSDI benefits.

Step 6: Gather and Submit Supporting Documentation

After the application is complete, you’ll want to submit any supporting documentation.

  • This may include:
    • Medical records
    • Doctor’s reports
    • Test results
    • Any other relevant documentation that can help to demonstrate the severity and impact of your medical condition

Step 7: Review and Submit Your Application

Before you submit the application, carefully review all of the information you included and make sure it’s accurate and complete.

  • If you’re applying online, you can save your progress and come back to it later if needed.
  • Once reviewed, submit your application to Social Security.
  • If submitted online, save a digital or printed copy of the application for your own records.

Step 8: Follow Up and Respond to Any Requests

Additionally, you’ll want to follow up and provide any additional information that’s requested.

  • After submitting your application, the Social Security Administration may contact you if they require additional information or documentation.
  • Respond promptly and provide any requested details to ensure the expedient processing of your claim.

To stay informed about the status of your application, you can:

  • Check online
  • Contact the Social Security Administration
  • Use their convenient online portal

Please be aware that processing time for SSDI applications does vary, so it’s important to be patient and stay informed throughout the process.

This is a general outline, and the specific steps and requirements may vary depending on individual circumstances.

We typically recommend that you consult directly with the Social Security Administration or seek assistance from a Social Security disability attorney who’s able to provide personalized guidance to you.
