3 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for SSDI Benefits
Are you thinking about applying for Social Security disability benefits but worry about making a mistake?
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. Today we’re going to talk about three mistakes to avoid when applying for SSDI benefits.
Before I get to the mistakes, I want to mention that as long as you are honest, there aren’t many mistakes that can’t be fixed in the SSDI application process—so breathe easy.
❌ Mistake #1: Failing to Provide Complete and Accurate Information
One of the most significant mistakes is not providing thorough and accurate information when applying for SSDI benefits.
It is critical that you:
- Fill out the application form completely
- Provide detailed information about your medical condition, work history, and daily activities
Be transparent and ensure that all information is up to date, including medical records and treatment history.
If you realize that you forgot something in your application, be sure to let your local office and/or the case adjudicator know as soon as possible so they can get it added into your file.
❌ Mistake #2: Not Seeking Medical Treatment or Documentation
A common mistake is failing to seek appropriate medical treatment or not obtaining sufficient medical documentation to support your disability claim.
It’s essential to consult with health care professionals who can:
- Provide a proper diagnosis
- Deliver treatment
- Maintain ongoing medical records
The Social Security Administration heavily relies on medical evidence to determine eligibility for disability.
That means it’s crucial to have comprehensive documentation that demonstrates the severity of your condition and its impact on your ability to work.
❌ Mistake #3: Not Appealing a Denied Claim Within the Deadline
If your initial SSDI or SSI application is denied, it’s important not to miss the deadline for appealing the decision.
Failing to appeal within the specified time frame can result in having to restart the application process from the beginning.
Here’s what you should do:
- Review the denial letter carefully
- Understand the reasons for the denial
- File the appeal within the designated time frame
The appeals process gives you the opportunity to present additional evidence and arguments to support your claim.
Set Yourself Up for Success
Avoiding these mistakes can help increase your chances of a successful SSDI or SSI application.
It’s advisable to seek assistance from professionals who are familiar with the Social Security Disability process. They can guide you through the application and appeals process and help ensure that you provide accurate and comprehensive information to support your claim.
