What to Expect During Your Telephonic Disability Hearing
Are you scheduled for a telephonic disability hearing and wondering what to expect?
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
In this video, we’re going to discuss some tips for attending your Social Security Disability hearing by phone:
1. Find a Quiet, Private Location
Find a quiet, private location for the call with minimal background noise or distractions. You will need to be the only person in the room, as the hearing is still a private proceeding.
2. Test Your Phone Connection in Advance
You may want to call a family member or friend in that scheduled location to test your phone connection and reception in advance. That way, you ensure a clear call for the hearing.
3. Be Prepared to Discuss Your Medical Condition
During the hearing, be prepared to provide detailed information about your medical conditions, symptoms, and limitations.
- Answer questions honestly and concisely, avoiding unnecessary tangents.
- Speak clearly and at a moderate pace so the judge can understand you.
- Listen carefully to the questions and ask for clarification if needed.
When responding, try to avoid exaggerating your symptoms while also not downplaying your limitations. As always, be respectful and professional in your interactions with the judge.
4. Prepare With Your Attorney
If you have an attorney, work with her or him to prepare responses to likely questions.
5. Clearly Explain How Your Condition Prevents You From Working
Finally, remember the key is to clearly convey how your medical condition prevents you from working. Providing specific examples and being consistent with your medical records is critical for a successful hearing.
