How to Prepare for a Successful Social Security Disability Hearing

Are you preparing to attend a Social Security disability hearing?

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

Today we’re going to discuss some strategies for a successful Social Security Disability hearing.

1. Consider Hiring a Disability Attorney

Having legal representation can increase your chances of winning at the hearing level.
Your lawyer can help:

  • Prepare you for the hearing
  • Obtain medical evidence
  • Draft a pre-hearing brief
  • Represent you effectively at the hearing

2. Review Your Medical Records and Case File

Particularly if you are representing yourself, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the details of your:

  • Conditions
  • Treatments
  • Limitations
  • Work history

This can help you testify credibly and accurately.

3. Provide Updated and Comprehensive Medical Evidence

Submit all recent medical records, test results, and, if possible, a detailed statement from your treating doctor about your limitations prior to the hearing.

4. Be Honest and Specific About Your Symptoms

Don’t exaggerate or minimize the impact of your condition on your daily functioning.
Give concrete examples when possible to demonstrate how your disability impacts your:

  • Daily life
  • Ability to work

5. Present Yourself Respectfully and Professionally

Whether attending in person or by video:

  • Dress neatly
  • Arrive early
  • Speak clearly
  • Remain calm and polite—even if frustrated

6. Listen Carefully and Answer Directly

In the hearing, try not to provide vague answers or ramble.
Listen carefully to the questions posed by the judge and/or your attorney and give focused, specific responses.
