Age can have a significant impact on Social Security disability claims. Here’s an overview of how age factors into the disability evaluation process.
1. Age Categories and the Grid Rules
The Social Security Administration uses age categories in combination with factors like:
- Education
- Work experience
- Residual Functional Capacity (RFC)
…to determine disability through the Medical-Vocational Guidelines, also known as the grid rules.
As applicants get older, it generally becomes easier to qualify for disability benefits, as the Social Security Administration recognizes that older workers may have more difficulty adjusting to new types of work.
2. Key Age Milestones in Disability Evaluations
- At age 50, the rules become more lenient—especially for those limited to sedentary work with limited skills or education.
- Then at age 55, the rules become even more lenient, making it potentially easier to qualify for benefits.
- For applicants under age 50, they generally face a higher bar to qualify for disability, as they are expected to have more capacity to adjust to other types of work.
3. Favorable Considerations Over Age 50
For applicants over the age of 50, the rules recognize:
- A decreased ability to adapt to new work
- That they may qualify for disability even if they are capable of some types of work
Other factors that are considered include:
- Education level
- Work history
- Transferable skills
- As well as, of course, your physical and mental limitations
4. Younger Applicants and Medical Listings
It’s important to note that meeting a medical listing can result in approval regardless of age.
Younger applicants may still qualify for disability benefits if they are severely impaired.
