Understanding the Compassionate Allowance Program for Social Security Disability

Are you wondering whether you may have a condition that may qualify for the Compassionate Allowance Program for Social Security Disability benefits?

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

In this video, we’re going to discuss the Social Security Disability Compassionate Allowance Program.

What Is the Compassionate Allowance Program?

The Compassionate Allowance Program is designed to expedite certain Social Security Disability applications for individuals with serious medical conditions. The purpose of the program is to quickly identify diseases and medical conditions that clearly meet the Social Security standards for disability benefits.

How Does It Work?

If an individual qualifies, an applicant for disability benefits can receive a decision on their application in weeks, instead of months or years, under the Compassionate Allowance Program.

The program covers more than 200 severe conditions, including:

  • Certain cancers
  • Adult brain disorders
  • Rare disorders that impact children

When an application is submitted for disability benefits that includes a condition on the Compassionate Allowance list, it is automatically flagged and fast-tracked for approval.

Is There a Special Form?

There is no special form or procedure required for the Social Security Administration to review your claim under the Compassionate Allowance Program.

However, to qualify, applicants must still meet other Social Security Disability criteria, such as:

  • Work history requirements for SSDI benefits
  • Medical evidence consistent with the qualifying condition

How Often Is the List Updated?

The Social Security Administration regularly updates the list of qualifying conditions based on:

  • Input from medical experts
  • Public suggestions

The program can significantly reduce wait times for individuals with the most significant and serious disabilities, allowing them to receive much-needed financial support on a quicker basis.
