When Are Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits Paid?
Are you wondering when you may receive the monthly Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, benefit?
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
Today we’re going to discuss when SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, benefits are paid.
Monthly SSI Payment Schedule
SSI payments are made on a monthly basis, with recipients receiving their benefits typically on the first day of each month.
The Social Security Administration encourages SSI recipients to sign up for direct deposit to have the monthly SSI benefit deposited directly into your bank account. Direct deposit is secure and convenient.
Retroactive Payments
In some cases, SSI recipients may receive retroactive payments covering past months, particularly if there was a delay in their SSI application for benefits and the processing of the approval.
Retroactive payments are typically made in a lump sum, but you may receive as many as three separate lump-sum payments depending on your total retroactive benefit amount.
SSI vs. SSDI Payment Dates
It’s important to note that the payment schedule for SSI benefits is different from the payment schedule for Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, benefits.
- SSI benefits are typically paid on the first of the month
- SSDI benefits are paid based on an individual’s birth date — typically the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month
Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA)
Like SSDI, SSI benefits are also subject to annual Cost of Living Adjustments based on changes in the Consumer Price Index.
Cost of living adjustments, when applied, typically take effect on January 1st of each year.
Keep Your Information Up to Date
It’s important that SSI recipients keep their contact information up to date with the Social Security Administration to ensure that benefit payments are received promptly and to receive any important notifications regarding your benefits.
Individual circumstances may vary, but these general guidelines may help recipients understand when SSI benefits are typically paid.
