When Do SSDI Benefits Start After Approval?

Are you wondering when Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, benefits start once you have been approved?

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

Today we’re going to talk about when SSDI benefits start.

The 5-Month Waiting Period

SSDI benefits do not start immediately upon becoming disabled. There is a mandatory 5-month waiting period from the onset of disability before benefits can begin.

The onset of disability is the date that Social Security uses to determine when your disability began and when you became unable to engage in substantial gainful activity. Benefits are not paid for the first five full months after that onset date.

Retroactive SSDI Benefits

However, SSDI benefits can be retroactive for a maximum of 12 months prior to the date of your application. This means that you can potentially receive benefits for up to a year before you applied, if you became disabled 17 months or more before your application date.

SSDI Application Processing Time

As far as the time that it takes to process your SSDI application—it does vary, but it can typically take from several months to several years.

During that time, the Social Security Administration is reviewing your medical records and evaluating your disability claim.

If your initial SSDI application is denied and you appeal the decision successfully, your benefits may start from the original application date, not from the date of the appeal decision.

SSDI Payment Schedule After Approval

Once your application is approved, SSDI benefits are typically paid on a monthly basis, and the payment schedule depends on your date of birth.

Final Thoughts

If you have specific questions about when your SSDI benefits will start or need assistance with your application, it’s recommended that you contact the Social Security Administration directly or visit their website for information and resources.
