5 Steps to Apply for Social Security Disability Benefits in 2025
Here are five steps to apply for Social Security disability benefits this year.
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
In today’s video, I’m going to outline five steps to applying for Social Security disability benefits this year.
Step 1: Gather the Necessary Information and Documents
This step is important for a smooth application process. Collect all relevant:
- Personal identification documents
- Comprehensive medical records that detail your condition
- Thorough work history
- Financial information, including bank statements and tax returns, as those may be required to assess your eligibility for SSI benefits
Step 2: Complete the SSDI or SSI Application
The online application is often the most convenient method, as it allows you to save your progress and complete the application at your own pace.
However, if you prefer personal assistance, you can always call the Social Security Administration or visit a local office.
You want to be prepared to spend about one to two hours filling out the application, answering questions about your condition, work history, and personal information.
Some attorneys may also be able to assist you with the initial application.
Step 3: Provide Detailed Information About Your Medical Condition
Be as specific and comprehensive as possible about:
- Your medical condition
- The treatments that you’ve tried to undergo
- How it all affects your ability to work
Include all relevant medical tests, diagnoses, as well as the contact information for the healthcare providers who have treated you for your condition.
Step 4: Be Prepared to Submit Additional Documentation
Once your application has been submitted to the Social Security Administration, the agency may request additional documents to verify your:
- Identity
- Citizenship status
- Work history
Having those documents ready to go can help to speed up this part of the process.
Also, if you are a veteran, your military service records may be important—particularly if you are rated for disability through the VA.
Step 5: Wait for the Social Security Administration to Process Your Application
During this time period, the Social Security Administration is going to:
- Review your application
- Contact your doctors for medical records or other evidence that may exist
- Possibly ask that you attend additional examinations called consultative examinations
You’ll want to stay proactive during this time and:
- Keep records of any new medical appointments or changes in your condition
- Be prepared to provide that information if requested
Along those lines, if you are working with an attorney, be sure that you:
- Keep their office updated on any changes to your condition
- Notify them of any new medical providers
- Inform them of any hospitalizations
