Three Tips for Applying for Social Security Disability with Diabetic Neuropathy

If you have been diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy and it’s preventing you from working in any capacity, you may be wondering if you qualify for Social Security Disability benefits. My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible, so they can focus on getting better.

Today we’re going to talk about some of the things you might want to consider when applying for Social Security Disability benefits with diabetic neuropathy to give yourself the best chance of being approved.

Number one, realize that diabetic neuropathy affects many people differently. Depending on the level of severity, if you are in the early stages and just have a recent diagnosis, but not many of the symptoms, or if the medication is alleviating most of the symptoms without giving you any unbearable side effects, you might not need to apply for disability. Just having a diagnosis does not mean that you will meet the criteria for Social Security disability benefits.

Number two, follow the advice of your doctor. If he or she recommends a certain prescription, discuss it with them. You are always welcome to seek a second opinion, but have that open dialogue with your providers regarding your concerns about medications, including any side effects or if you had a previous reaction to that medication.

Number three, respond to letters that are sent to you by the Social Security Administration or Disability Determination Services, as they might ask you additional questions regarding your pain, your activities of daily living, and even for help in obtaining your medical records from your provider. By being responsive and helpful when you can, it provides Social Security and Disability Determination Services a better picture of what limitations you specifically have from your diabetic neuropathy.
