SSDI Benefit Qualifications
If you’re disabled and unable to work, you may be wondering about SSDI benefit qualifications.
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
In this video, we’re going to talk about what the qualifications are for SSDI benefits. First, it’s important to realize that we are talking about SSDI – Social Security Disability Insurance – benefits. These are benefits that are based on what you were able to pay into the Social Security system while you were working.
This is different from SSI – Supplemental Security Income – which is an income and asset restricted disability program.
To qualify for SSDI benefits, you first must have enough quarters of coverage. This often means that you must have worked full-time for five of the last 10 years. However, if you are young or if you were a high earner and only worked part-time for some of those years, you may still qualify for SSDI benefits.
Second, if you have sufficient quarters of coverage for SSDI benefits, you must be disabled and totally unable to work for a period of at least 12 months. You must be disabled and unable to work due to one or more severe medically determinable impairments.
If you have sufficient work credits and your medical records indicate that you are totally disabled and unable to work, then you may qualify for SSDI benefits
