How to Prepare for Your Social Security Disability Hearing
If you have an upcoming Social Security Disability hearing and are starting to get nervous about what to expect, this post is for you.
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. Today, we’re going to discuss some important considerations to help you feel prepared and confident ahead of your upcoming Social Security Disability hearing.
1. Review Your Case with Your Attorney
If you have an attorney, work with your attorney to review your case before your hearing. You should ensure that all necessary documentation has been submitted to the Social Security Administration.
Make sure you’re providing your attorney with any new medical records or other relevant information that may help support your claim.
2. Be Prepared to Testify About Your Condition
During your hearing, you will likely be asked to testify about your medical condition and how it impacts your ability to work.
Be prepared to provide detailed information about:
- Your symptoms
- Your limitations
- How your condition affects your activities of daily living
3. Dress Appropriately
Dress appropriately for your hearing, as it is a formal legal proceeding.
You want to be comfortable, but also presentable to show respect for the process.
4. Arrive On Time—And Be Prepared to Wait
If you have an in-person hearing, plan to arrive at the hearing location early, but also be prepared for potential delays.
If your hearing is by video or phone, make sure you are ready at the scheduled time. However, just like in-person hearings, delays may occur:
- For video hearings, stay logged into Microsoft Teams.
- For phone hearings, remain in a quiet location with good reception, by yourself, and be available until the hearing begins.
5. Be Respectful and Honest
During the hearing, it’s important to be respectful and honest.
Answer all questions asked of you—whether by the judge or your attorney—truthfully and to the best of your ability.
6. Be Aware of Your Body Language and Tone
In in-person, video, and telephonic hearings, your body language and tone matter.
- Be polite and respectful
- Avoid being defensive or argumentative
- Let your sincerity and credibility come through in your demeanor
