Common Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits

If you’re considering applying for Social Security Disability benefits, you may be wondering if there are common mistakes that you can avoid making when applying.

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. Today, we’re going to discuss how to avoid common mistakes when applying for Social Security Disability benefits.

1. Waiting Too Long to Begin the Application Process

Waiting too long to start your application can result in missing out on back-due benefits, particularly with SSI claims. Additionally, if you wait several years to apply for disability benefits, it may be difficult to obtain medical records from when your conditions first started having a significant impact on your activities of daily living.

2. Failing to Provide All Information to the Social Security Administration

It’s important that you share not only the entire list of conditions that are preventing you from working, but also all the doctors, hospitals, and clinics that you have seen in connection with those conditions.

This helps give the Social Security Administration a complete background on your medical conditions and the limitations they place on your ability to work.

3. Failing to File Timely Appeals

If the Social Security Administration denies your application or reconsideration appeal, you have 60 days, plus an additional five days for mailing, to submit your appeal. Be sure that you submit it—or hire someone to submit it for you—within that time frame.
