When Should You Apply for SSI Benefits?

If you’re disabled and unable to work, you may be wondering when the best time is to apply for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, benefits.

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible, so they can focus on getting better. In this video, we will discuss when to consider applying for SSI benefits.

As you’ll hear, there are multiple times when it may come up for consideration. And when it comes to SSI benefits, you will want to apply as early as possible—because SSI benefits cannot be payable until you complete the application.

  • Apply As Soon As You Believe You Are Eligible

It’s generally advisable to apply for SSI benefits as soon as you believe you meet the eligibility criteria. Delaying the application may result in a delay in receiving benefits.

However, because SSI is a need-based program, and eligibility is determined by income and resource limits, you may want to wait until your income and/or resources fall below that threshold.

  • Apply When a Disability or Medical Condition Prevents You from Working

Apply for SSI when you have a disability or medical condition that prevents you from working. SSI benefits are available to individuals with disabilities or medical conditions that prevent them from working and earning a substantial income.

If you have a condition that meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability, you may want to consider applying for SSI benefits.

  • Apply If You’re in Financial Need

SSI benefits are intended to provide financial assistance to individuals who:

  • Have limited income and resources
  • Are disabled and unable to work

If you are in financial need and meet the income and resource requirements, applying for SSI benefits may be appropriate.

  • Wait Until You Meet the Citizenship or Lawful Residency Requirements

SSI benefits are available to United States citizens and certain categories of non-citizens who meet the residency requirements.

If you meet the citizenship or lawful residency requirements, as well as the other requirements of disability and limited assets, you may want to consider applying for SSI.

  • Apply When You Have Supporting Documentation and Medical Evidence

It’s important to gather supporting documentation and medical evidence that will demonstrate your eligibility for SSI benefits.

Once you have collected the necessary documentation that shows your ongoing disability, it may be a good time to apply.

Final Thoughts

Remember, these are general guidelines, and individual circumstances may vary.

It’s recommended that you consult directly with the Social Security Administration or seek assistance from a Social Security disability attorney to determine the best time to apply based on your specific situation.
