Can You Prepare for a Social Security Disability Consultative Exam?

Is it possible to prepare for a Social Security disability consultative exam?

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. In this video, we will discuss whether you can prepare for a Social Security disability consultative examination.

1. Understand the Purpose of the Exam

A Social Security consultative examination is typically conducted when additional medical evidence is needed to evaluate your disability claim. The purpose of the consultative exam is to gather objective medical information about your condition from an independent healthcare professional.

Keep in mind that the examiner’s role is to assess your current medical condition, not provide treatment or offer a definitive diagnosis.

2. Review Your Medical History

Before going to the consultative exam, review your medical history and gather any relevant medical records, test results, or treatment notes. Familiarize yourself with your symptoms, limitations, and the progression of your condition.

This can sometimes help you to provide accurate and detailed information to the examiner during the exam. While they may not review medical records that you bring along with you, reviewing them before the exam can sometimes help to trigger your memory as far as the treatment and the experience that you have had so far as it relates to your condition.

3. Be Prepared to Communicate Effectively

During the consultative exam, be prepared to communicate your symptoms, limitations, and the impact of your condition on your daily life and ability to work. Provide a clear and honest account of your medical history, including any changes or updates since your application or appeal.

Answer the examiner’s questions to the best of your ability, and do not exaggerate or downplay your symptoms. The more detailed and accurate information you can provide, the better the examiner can assess and understand your condition.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to note that while you can prepare in terms of familiarizing yourself with your medical history and being ready to communicate effectively, you cannot specifically prepare for the medical tests or examinations that will be conducted during the consultative exam. These tests will be determined by the examiner based on the specific needs of your case.
