How to Maximize Your SSDI Backpay
Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to maximize the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) backpay that you may be entitled to?
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
In today’s video, we will discuss maximizing your Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, backpay.
7 Strategies to Maximize Your SSDI Backpay
To maximize Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, consider the following strategies:
1. Ensure Accurate Calculations
Make sure the Social Security Administration has correct information about your work history and earnings, so that they are able to calculate your benefits accurately.
2. Apply for All Benefits You May Be Entitled To
This may include spousal benefits if you are currently or were previously married.
3. Consider the Timing of Your Application
While you often can’t delay SSDI benefits the way you may be able to with retirement benefits, applying as soon as you become disabled is critical to maximize any potential benefit back-due period.
4. Account for Cost-of-Living Adjustments
SSDI benefits typically increase annually with cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), so staying informed about those adjustments may help you to better plan your finances.
5. Avoid Common Mistakes
Failing to report changes in your income or medical condition to the Social Security Administration may lead to reduced benefits, so you’ll want to stay compliant with reporting requirements.
6. Be Aware of How Other Benefits Interact with SSDI
Some public benefits, like workers’ compensation, may reduce your SSDI payments, while private disability benefits and VA benefits may not have an impact.
7. Seek Legal Assistance
An experienced Social Security attorney may be able to help you:
- Navigate the complex application process
- Appeal denials, if necessary
- And overall, ensure that you’re receiving the maximum benefits you’re entitled to
SSDI Is Based on Your Work History
Remember, SSDI benefits are designed to replace a portion of your pre-disability earnings, so the maximum benefit that you can receive is largely determined by your work history and earnings record.
