Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits for a Musculoskeletal Disorder
Are you thinking about applying for Social Security disability benefits for a musculoskeletal disorder?
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.
In today’s video, we’re going to discuss some tips for building a compelling application for Social Security disability benefits for musculoskeletal disorders.
1. Obtain Comprehensive Medical Documentation
Gather detailed medical records that document your specific musculoskeletal condition, including:
- Imaging results such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans
- Lab tests
- Your treatment history
You can also ask your doctor to complete a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) form that details how your condition limits your ability to work and perform activities of daily living.
2. Focus on Your Functional Limitations
It can be helpful to document how your musculoskeletal disorder impacts your ability to perform work-related tasks like:
- Sitting
- Standing
- Walking
- Lifting
- Carrying
You may be able to do this by keeping a detailed journal of your symptoms and how they impact your daily activities and ability to function.
3. Understand the Social Security Administration’s Evaluation Criteria
You can review the Social Security Administration’s Blue Book listings for musculoskeletal disorders in Section 1 of the Blue Book. You can see if your condition may meet the specific criteria listed.
Even if you don’t meet a listing as it is in the Blue Book, you want to be able to demonstrate that your condition prevents you from working in any capacity, even doing sedentary work.
4. Remember How the SSA Evaluates Claims
The Social Security Administration evaluates musculoskeletal disorders based on how they impact your ability to perform work-related activities—not just on the diagnosis alone.
Providing thorough documentation of your functional limitations is crucial for a successful claim.
