5 Things to Do While Waiting for Your SSI Decision
If you’re waiting for a decision on your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application, you may be wondering what you can do in the meantime.
My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better. In this video, we will discuss five things to do while waiting for your SSDI or SSI decision.
1. Gather and Organize Financial and Personal Information
- Collect and organize relevant financial documents such as bank statements, income records, and proof of expenses.
- Keep track of any changes in your financial situation and update those records accordingly.
- Gathering personal information documents—such as your Social Security card, birth certificate, and proof of citizenship or immigration status—can also be helpful.
2. Maintain Open Communication with the Social Security Administration
- Notify the Social Security Administration of any changes to your contact information, including your mailing address and your phone number.
- Respond promptly to any requests for additional information or documentation sent to you by the Social Security Administration.
- Keep records of all communication with the SSA, including the dates, names, and details of the conversations or correspondence.
3. Follow Prescribed Treatment Plans and Attend Medical Appointments
- Adhere to any prescribed medical treatment plans and attend all scheduled medical appointments.
- If you have concerns about your treatment, discuss those concerns with your provider.
- Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and take any prescribed medications as directed.
- Keep track of medical visits and records, as they may be requested during the application process or subsequent reviews.
4. Explore Other Potential Sources of Assistance
- Research and inquire about other available assistance programs, such as state or local welfare programs, community resources, or nonprofit organizations that may provide temporary financial relief or support with basic needs.
- Seek out organizations or support groups that specialize in assisting individuals navigating the SSI process for guidance and advice.
5. Seek Legal Representation or Advocate Assistance If Needed
- You may want to consider consulting with a Social Security disability attorney who can help provide guidance, answer your questions, and advocate for your rights throughout the Social Security application process.
- Legal representation can help ensure that your application is complete and accurate, which can increase the chances of a favorable decision.
