Understanding the Social Security Disability Blue Book | Beacon Disability

What Is the Social Security Disability Blue Book?

Are you wondering what the Social Security Disability Blue Book is and how it may relate to your disability case?

My name is Kaitlin Wildoner, and I’m an attorney who helps disabled clients obtain their disability benefits as quickly as possible so they can focus on getting better.

Today we’re going to discuss the Social Security Blue Book of Listings.

What Is the Blue Book?

The Blue Book of listings outlines specific medical criteria that disability claimants must meet to qualify for disability benefits.
It contains a comprehensive list of impairments categorized by body system, including:

  • Mental disorders
  • Neurological disorders
  • Immune system disorders
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • …among others

What Information Does the Blue Book Provide?

For each condition, the Blue Book specifies:

  • The severity and duration of symptoms required to meet that listing
  • How those symptoms may impact daily functioning and the ability to work

How Is the Blue Book Used?

The Blue Book serves as a guide to ensure consistent evaluation of disability claims by the Social Security Administration.
It helps State Disability Determination Services assess whether an individual’s medical condition meets the definition of disability as set forth by the federal Social Security Administration.

Is Listing in the Blue Book Required?

While having an impairment listed in the Blue Book is not necessarily required to be eligible for disability benefits, the Blue Book provides a road map and guidance on the type of medical evidence and documentation that is often needed to support a claim.

The Blue Book also offers guidance on evaluating impairments that are not specifically listed.

Should You Work With an Attorney?

The Blue Book can be complex and technical, making it difficult for the general public to understand.
Consulting with a disability attorney can be helpful to navigating the Blue Book and ensuring a strong disability claim—if applicable to your specific situation.
